12/15 - Anne Royall, about to make her first foray into Washington, in search of her Revolutionary War widow's pension, arrived at the City Tavern in Alexandria, and was given free lodgings by the innkeeper, Horatio Clagett, a Mason like her late husband. She stayed in Alexandria for the winter: "I was not fit to appear out of my room" (because of her poverty and threadbare clothing).
