Had, in 1827, one of the first railroads built in the U.S (9 miles long
-built in 3 months). It was gravity-powered, and allowed cars of coal to
be brought down from the Summit Mines. (source: Annals
of N. America)
The name has, in the 20th century, been changed to Jim Thorpe, in honor
of the athlete. His widow shopped around for a town that would suitably
honor his remains. It is a launching point for river rafting on the Lehigh.

Situated in a narrow part of the penninsula between the Schuylkill and
Delaware rivers, where they converge. It was one of the first cities laid
out in a rectangular grid pattern. Until about 1810 (1820?) it was
the largest city in the U.S., but thereafter it was surpassed by New York.
Home of the Continental Congress for a while during the Revolution,
but later occupied by the British, who helped introduce a lavish aspect
to its lifestyle that stayed with it. It became the U.S. Capitol in the
last few years of the 18c, after which Washington came into being.

Presently a small city (approx 100,000 pop)about 20 miles southwest
of the center of Pittsburg, and the crossroads
of I-70 (and the older Route 40), and I-79. Probably was on the Cumberland
road. Acc. to Harpers Ency. of U.S. Hist., it was, in 1809, the
first home in the U.S. of Alexander Campbell, founder of the Campbellites.
