The name has, in the 20th century, been changed to Jim Thorpe, in honor of the athlete. His widow shopped around for a town that would suitably honor his remains. It is a launching point for river rafting on the Lehigh.
Home of the Continental Congress for a while during the Revolution, but later occupied by the British, who helped introduce a lavish aspect to its lifestyle that stayed with it. It became the U.S. Capitol in the last few years of the 18c, after which Washington came into being.
